Attempt to estimate the mutifunctionality of paddy fields by using the scientific approach

Attempt to estimate the mutifunctionality of paddy fields by using the scientific approach(2007-2009)

Introduction

Attempt to estimate the multifunctionality of paddy fields by using the scientific approach

Shizuoka Prefectural Research Institute of Agriculture and Forestry
Research project regarding the multifunctionality of rice and fallow paddy fields.

Agriculture and agricultural areas play various other roles besides food supply. This feature is termed “multifunctionality of agriculture.”

There are a number of paddy fields in Japan. In recent times, people have begun to realize that aside from rice production, paddy fields are also valuable for other reasons and are beautiful landscapes. On the other hands, the increase in fallow paddy fields has raised concerns regarding a decrease in the multifunctional nature of paddy fields. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the mutifunctionality of rice paddy and fallow paddy fields from the 3 following viewpoints: (1) biodiversity, (2) water quality, and (3) landscape. Further, we aimed to develop effective management methods for paddy fields that utilize the multifunctional feature of these fields.

Missions of our project team.

Mission1 To estimate the biodiversity, landscape uses, and water quality in rice and fallow paddy fields.
Mission2 To develop effective management methods for rice and fallow paddy fields to improve biodiversity and water purification.
Mission3 To propose practical models for promoting agricultural management by utilizing the landscape and biodiversity in paddy fields.
